Random Reviews. Chapter-4 : Memories of Tomorrow (Mirai Nikki / Future Diary)

What do you get when you take a bit of the psychological factor of Death note, the horror factor of Higurashi, a cup of romance factor and make an anime out of it? The answer is Future diary (Mirai Nikki). All this time my 'Random' Reviews were only game reviews. Now it's game+anime reviews. Before you read any further, I must warn you, the anime I'm reviewing has lots of mature content plus there will be spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk. With that out of the way, let's begin.

In this anime, the protagonist, Yukiteru Amano is a lonely junior high student who writes anything and everything he sees in his diary. He is friends with Deus Ex Machina (Space-time God). One day, he wakes up to find his diary can read the future. He later learns that he was chosen as 1 of 12 future diary (Diaries that can see the future depending on what the holder used to write on his/her diary) holders who will try to kill each other because the last person alive becomes the new space-time god. He forms an alliance with his lover, Yuno Gasai and police chief Keigo Kurusu so that he can survive.

At first he doesn't want to be god. But when he loses both his parents, he wants to be god to bring them and everyone that died, back. He kills everyone and becomes god in the end but learns that he can't bring back the dead.

Now, this anime is very sad. It made me almost shed a tear (taking into account I haven't cried because of a movie/book in 10 years, that is an achievement). 11 out of the 12 players die and about 8 of those deaths are varying degrees of sad. For me, the death of Minene Uryu was the saddest. It's also for this reason that I was half happy and half disappointed when she came back in a few more episodes.

This anime has a pretty good cast. Most of these characters are well-developed as well. This makes you fell close to them and it makes their deaths even sadder. As for the music, if any of the themes will get stuck in your head, it'll be this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdQaZg7_Tck

This anime does suffer from a few dud episodes but nothing that destroys it in the long run. One of these dud episodes, is the one where Yuno kidnaps Yuki. It has blatant fan-service and a disorganized story. Personally, I enjoyed this anime more than Higurashi and Death Note. It didn't have a single dull moment. I recommend you to watch this.

I rate this: 95/100 Thanks for reading!
